Charities are Social Media Leaders?

Light Trails“We live in an age where opportunities for communication are increasing faster than ever. With the rise of Web 2.0 media such as social networking sites and blogs, it has become all the easier for philanthropic organizations to build new connections, as well as publicize their activities and needs.

And charities have responded, emerging as the surprising leader in the social media landscape. A UMass Dartmouth study released in June stated

“new research shows that charitable organizations are still outpacing the business world and academia in their use of social media. In the latest study (2008) a remarkable eighty-nine percent of charitable organizations are using some form of social media including blogs, podcasts, message boards, social networking, video blogging, and wikis.”

These figures are an increase from 2007, in which “seventy-five percent of the respondents…reported they use at least one form of social media.” However, one area where charities can improve is in leveraging these tools to raise funds. In 2008, the study notes, only forty-five percent called social media “very important” to their fundraising strategy, versus forty-six in 2007. “Somewhat important” answers received a small decrease as well, with thirty-six percent in 2008 versus thirty-eight in 2007.

These figures are an interesting anomaly in what is overall a strong push among charities to adapt to and take advantage of social media. As these new forms of communication take hold and break boundaries, it is important to explore what they can bring to fundraising.”

Blog Action Day: Climate Change

So, here we are, Blog Action Day, and just how many people are blogging about the same topic today?! When I signed up, there were 2,679 sites registered (including the official Google Blog, and Mashable – both sites with HUGE audiences), with an expected reach of 9,010,355 readers!

I thought I’d do what I’m best at – pointing people to other great sources of information, so here we are…

Some interesting links:

Worlde: Mary Wollstonecraft’s A Vindication of the Rights of Woman

Wordle WoolstonecraftOK, Tuesday morning, I will be bringing my class to order for “20th Century British History”, and in looking to experiment with some of those ideas for using online tools, and having recently found Wordle (I know, a bit late in the day), I thought this had a great potential for turning some great wordy documents into something interesting for use in PowerPoint slides, and seeing what the key themes are running through a document! This Worlde is taken from the text of Chapter 4 of  Mary Wollstonecraft’s A Vindication of the Rights of Woman. I wonder what it would look like with the full text (they’re available as separate chapters here), and it’s interesting to see the words removed from context – so we don’t know if the chapter is positive or negative to specific aspects of women’s behaviour… to which we’ll need to go back to the original!

Video?
I’m suspecting, as women’s rights are still such a key issue, and this is such a seminal text, there’s plenty on YouTube, so let’s go random with the first entry, and see where it takes you from there!

Christianity in the Digital Space

With 2 minutes warning, giving a 5 minute summary of an hour’s conversation on “Creating Community” at the Christianity in Digital Space Conference, University of Durham, July 2009. A really interesting conference, with lots of new and creative ideas flowing.

Reddit

Reddit Screenshot“reddit is a source for what’s new and popular online. vote on links that you like or dislike and help decide what’s popular, or submit your own!”

Reddit is fairly high on my list of bookmarking sites to properly get the hang of, as I only added one link to one poster site, and quadrupled my traffic on that day – deserving of further investigation!
